Guillermo Luxán

Guillermo Luxán is a group leader at the Institute for Cardiovascular Regeneration at Goethe University Frankfurt. Originally trained in developmental and cardiovascular biology at Spanish National Centre for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) in Madrid, he obtained his PhD with distinction studying the molecular mechanisms underlying cardiac development and disease. He then moved to the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine in Münster as an EMBO Fellow, where his interests shifted towards vascular biology and the role of the endothelium in maintaining cardiac homeostasis. In 2019, he joined Goethe University Frankfurt and established his independent research group in 2022. Today, his research brings together vascular biology, physiology and mechanobiology to understand how the cardiac microvasculature changes during ageing and cardiovascular disease. His work has been supported by competitive funding from the DFG, DZHK, and Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation. Beyond research, he is passionate about teaching and mentoring the next generation of scientists. When not in the lab, Guillermo can often be found on the rugby pitch or exploring the roads around Frankfurt on his bike.
