Dr. David John is Head of the Bioinformatics Department at the Institute for Cardiovascular Regeneration (ICVR). He studied Bioinformatics at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen and completed his diploma thesis at the MPI for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim. In 2013, he joined the team of Prof. Dimmeler in Frankfurt to pursue his PhD. Here he developed RNAEditor, a widely used software tool for detecting RNA editing events from transcriptome sequencing data. His group has focused on developing computational and machine learning methods for the analysis of transcriptome sequencing data — from single-nucleus and single-cell RNA-seq to explainable AI — with the aim of identifying novel genes and biomarkers underlying heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases. His recent work includes applying neural networks and explainable AI to decode heart failure subtypes as well as large-scale single-nucleus transcriptomic studies of cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis. Since analysing terabytes of RNA-seq data still leaves him hungry for more things that beep, crash, and need a reboot, he spends his free time riding his mountain bike through the woods and setting up firewalls, servers, and cloud infrastructure for friends and family.
