Macarena de Andrés is a postdoctoral research scientist at the Institute of Cardiovascular Regeneration at Goethe University Frankfurt. She obtained her PhD at the Spanish National Centre for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC). There, she worked in two different groups, gaining expertise in vascular biology (Prof. Rui Benedito’s lab) and mitochondrial metabolism (Prof. José Antonio Enríquez’s lab). Her PhD work focused on developing and characterizing mouse models for VHL disease. During her PhD, she received an EMBO Fellowship to visit the ETH Zürich, where she learned techniques to further characterize endothelial metabolism in vitro in the laboratory of Prof. Katrien De Bock. Her current research focuses on understanding how endothelial metabolism affects heart aging from two key perspectives: bioenergetics and glycosylation. Her work has been supported by competitive funding from the CPI. Outside the lab, Macarena enjoys spending her free time in nature, climbing and running, or exploring Frankfurt’s cultural scene.
